Rally Z for your time

Kinja'd!!!

Opponauts, who has made the jump to Windows 10? Do you game on your pc? What do you like/hate? I signed up the other night with 5 minutes to spare, only because a game I play a lot of doesn’t support SLI setups unless you go with DX12 from Win10. I recently made the jump to 8.1, and it’s not bad, it runs cooler with games and the lack of a start button hasn’t bothered me since I usually type most programs I need to access. My one concern is drivers and game compatibility. Waht do you all think? I saw one post with someone that had 10 running... so I’m just curious to see what ppl think.

Sticking with 7.

Any reason in particular? I was going to stick to 7, but I had to reformat and figured might as well try 8.1

I rarely game, but I have literally a billion things going at once and 8, 8.1, and 10 not to mention Server 2012 do not gel well with productivity designed builds.

I’ve got 10 installed in Hyper-V on my 8.1 desktop. Barring any day one issues, I’m definitely going to upgrade.

Gonna give it a couple days to make sure it’s nice and stable though. It’s a huge upgrade from 8.1 and an even bigger upgrade from 7.

Its that good huh? That is what I wanted to hear. I moved to 8.1 about 4 months ago so I’m used to that (ish - aside from how some customization stuff was moved around). What was the biggest change you noticed

Kinja'd!!! Lekker > HammerheadFistpunch

Kinja'd!!!0

I guess in that case the determining factor will be how recent the components are and if there is newer drivers available. I found my stuff ran better, and more optimized when I changed to 8.1 , my guess was that my slightly old Motherboard and CPU (~3 years old) had just better drivers and built-in functionality with the newer OS. But that isn’t always the case

I’m going to make the switch to 10 when its available in July. I have Windows 8.1, it works fine for me and I’ve never understood all the hate. I will say that it would definitely be better if I had a touch screen but compared to Vista, 8.1 is a dream.

I’m running Win10 on my home machine and a test box at work. I haven’t run in to a lot of issues with the work unit but there have been a few driver hiccups with my home laptop mostly due to the hybrid video card that lets you switch between an AMD video adapter and an Intel one. The AMD is supposed to be the high quality but juice sucking choice and the Intel is the low power option. Also, my built in webcam and mike don’t have drivers yet. Those are mostly HP’s fault, though. Other than that Win10 has been pretty painless but I don’t game on either box so I can’t address that. I like the UI much more than Win8 but there are some decisions, like how many steps it takes to connect to a VPN, that don’t make sense to me.

Kinja'd!!! Nibbles > Lekker
07/01/2015 at 13:56

Kinja'd!!!0

I don’t really have a lot of software installed on it, however it internets just fine. Internetting is great, doesn’t have any issues with rendering (I do have some knockoff cad-type program I use to plan my house upgrades), and is definitely not a resource hog. It runs on 4GB RAM without a hiccup, though my 7 install forced me to upgrade to 6GB. I haven’t had a single crash since upgrading to 10xxx. Sorry, I can’t remember which specific build I’m on right now.

I’ll install MYST on it tonight and let you know how well it runs MYST.

07/01/2015 at 13:58

Kinja'd!!!0

gotcha. Yeah there are a lot of small configuration changes from 7 to 8.x and quite honestly the easiest way I’ve found to get around them is simply type the control panel setup name you’re looking for after hitting the Windows key. They’ve made the changes so abstract, even more so with the whole pulling the menu when you put your cursor in the corner that I thought I was going to pull out my hair. The only drivers I really care about are my peripherals (corsair/Logitech mouse & keyboard), and my 2 770 video cards. Both of which should be readily available, I’m just worried about how games might handle that. Oh and a Blue Yeti Mic. Shit never works right anyway tho

I can agree with the touchscreen portion. It definitely seems to have been designed for tablets, etc in order to not have to create a mobile version of the OS. At the same time, it looks neat and polished. I got over most of my nuances by 3 days with 8.1, the only one I can’t stand is the video full screen stuff when playing a local video with any given app and it’s lack of ability to control volume separately. It grinds the f* out of my gears. But I got Netflix now so it doesn’t matter as much anymore

I deal with Server 2012, which uses the Win8 UI for some unfathomable reason, all of the time and I pinned the Control Panel icon to the taskbar on all of them just to make my life easier.

Kinja'd!!! Lekker > Nibbles
07/01/2015 at 14:04

Kinja'd!!!0

That’s good to know; RAM won’t be an issue as of now since I have 16gb albeit not fancy fast. My true concern is it not being able to deal with Chrome’s RAM hogging for example, or how it handles dual or triple monitors since I run anywhere from 2 to 4 of them at a time and some OS’s can’t handle that. Like 8.1 is simply unable to play nice with any Video Playback programs when you have more than one screen or just in general, not letting you adjust the volume of just that program or forcing the screen to go into that weird sectioned mode where its no longer just sitting on the desktop but allocated a particular part of it, or all.

You can flip between a full page startscreen or a conventional start menu. The new Edge browser is fucking fantastic. And the biggest change of all is that all of the Metro Apps now run in their own Windows just like a desktop application.

That’s a huge deal, especially for people who like me who the idea of the higher security behind the Apps (and make no mistake, they are very hard to break out of) but didn’t want to always run them in full screen mode like in 8.1.

Now you get the best of both worlds.

Someone on the Ars forums has said that Windows 10 runs better on his laptop that originally came with Windows XP, then even Windows XP did. But I don’t have the older hardware to test out his claims myself.

I can say for sure, that ever since Windows Vista was released, every subsequent version has had lower spec requirements than the OS that came before it, and Windows 10 is going to be lower still.

How have I never heard of Edge...Aha... is it only for Win10? I just looked it up on Microsoft’s site and can’t see much on the compatibility/download.

Haha my work lappy is a Lenovo T430 and I am running 2 external displays with it. One VGA and one USB video adapter, I’ll admit tho with only 6gb of ram it falls on its face quite a lot. It’s like doing work involves a loading/progress bar from back in the PS1 days. But at least it allows me to easily split the monitors into useful sections without forcing the weird full screen mode on select apps.

Waow, really? My L440 handles it fine, one DVI monitor one VGA monitor and the internal display running all in tandem. It’s only got a base i5 and 4GB too.

And yeah at this time Edge is pre-release software, available for Win10 preview only.

It makes sense that 8 and 8.1 are very functional for home use. What do you use your home PC for most? Going to make assumptions, not attempting to be rude:

Web browsing

Gaming

Media/Entertainment/Video Playback (If using Netflix, et al this drops to browsing)

The 8 & 8.1 environments are great for this type of use, however in an engineering and productions driven and mostly work related environment they are not functional for most non-IT-types. They are derivative of the tablet and phone/touchscreen systems that are more prolific than ever before.

When running up to and above 25 VMs the 8, 8.1, & 10 software do not compliment dev and work systems. I do keep an 8.1 and 10 VM though to test and see how they cope with CAD, CADe, solidworks, and my various sysadmin tools.

I have a 5 year-old Dell laptop that I meant to sell a year ago when I got a Macbook Pro but never got around to selling. It’s been sitting in my garage in a stack of other, much older laptops that at this point I just need to clean out and donate, or recycle. It’s still halfway decent hardware so I might upgrade it to Windows 10 to see what’s up. And then sell it. Or just let it continue sitting in my garage unused.

I do infact do a lot of gaming and browsing at home, yes. But I also run my own VMs and my own CAD software at home. I don’t really know why you think the UI even gets in the way at all in those kinds of environments. I usually have 2-3 UG sessions open at any given time at work, plus Outlooks, and sometimes combined that with Solidworks for casting validity check, and CATIA for bubble drawings.

I can count on one hand how many times I use the start menu day in and day out. I already have everything pinned to the taskbar. And anything that isn’t there I just do a Winkey + Search for. Which in Windows 8.1 is just Winky + S + Search if you don’t want to the start screen to take over your entire screen. Or just keep using Winkey + Search if you don’t care.

The UI really does not get in your way, and it goes double for 10.

Seriously? What the heck. I mean I keep my internal display working as well, but I’m honestly always having to go to resource manager and kill stuff to get memory. I average 90% RAM usage at all times during a normal day. Don’t even get me started if I open some youtube tabs for music. It may have something to do with all the Corporate bloatware they put on these machines, so many encryption, backup and AV solutions it takes damn near 30 minutes to resume from sleep or just as long for everything to start on boot.

8.1 added a lot of good usability over 8, like the aforementioned Winkey + S so you don’t have to always leave your desktop just to perform a search.

Also, being a sysadmin it might interest you to know (if you didn’t already) there will actually be some capabilities added to install and even update conventional desktop (Win32) applications via the Store. Including having your own private store for Enterprise (which is already supported in 8).

It uses a forked version of App-V to basically virtualize any of the Win32 APIs that aren’t already there in WRT, so that the - usually reserved for Win32 - desktop application can actually be recompiled to an AppX format and run inside the “App” Integrity Level with all of the same security benefits that come with it.

Switch to IE11. I only use Chrome for Kinja because Kinja hates everything but Chrome gets along with it the best. Everything else is IE and here’s why: I have about 40 tabs open on two windows of IE11, taking up 259MB. One tab on Chrome is using 200MB. That’s hueg. As for your corp apps (Lync, Outlook etc) you may have a bad installation - those things shouldn’t take up that much memory.

Can’t. Our #$%^$%&* tools and sites aren’t compatible with anything over IE8. It’s moronic and asshattery, but alas. And yeah tbh that’s just how much they’ve always taken up from previous installs. We recently made the change from 2007 to 2013, allowing tabbed convos and everything (super useful when you’re trying to coordinate an event with 20 different people), which just seemed to make it worse. Now you understand a bit more of the conundrum. I could try to get the apps reinstalled, but since these lappies come with a default image from the start I doubt it’ll help a lot
